Core Education Catalog Deadline – EXTENDED to March 1, 2025, from January 31, 2025
All Core Education course proposals must be approved in CIM by March 1, 2025, to be included in the 2025-26 catalog. Courses that are in CIM and not approved by the March 1, 2025, deadline will follow catalog year policy:

  • Existing courses adding a Core Education designation need to be approved by the March 1, 2025, deadline.
  • New Core Education courses can become effective the first term following their approval during the 2025-2026 AY if approved prior to week 7 of the current term.

CIM Submissions
We are excited to receive CIM proposals from faculty who attended the CADI in September and look forward to submissions from the December CADI cohort by the end of March. Need help with what to do after attending the CADI? The CADI to CIM Team is ready and waiting to support you.
Reminder: Please have your course submitted to CIM within three months of attending the CADI.

Core Education and Current Students
Core Education will launch in the Summer of 2025 and replace the Baccalaureate Core. Students who start at OSU now through Spring 2025 will be admitted under the catalog requirements for the Baccalaureate Core.

Please do not advise current students or students admitted from now through Spring 2025 about the new Core Education curriculum catalog requirements. Please continue advising students based on their current catalog requirements.

There are significant implications to students’ degree completion if advised not to finish requirements in the Bacc Core. We are still determining which courses will be approved in Core Education. Formal guidance will be forthcoming to inform prospective students about Core Education and have critical conversations with current students about changing their catalog requirements from Bacc Core to Core Education.

For prospective students, please work with the Transfer Admissions Team to determine the best academic term to matriculate to OSU, which will impact their future general education and degree requirements. Information about Bacc Core requirements and supporting prospective and transfer students can be found on the university’s general education website

Difference, Power, and Oppression (DPO) Academies
If you are designing a DPO course, please apply to the DPO Academy. Waivers for the DPO Academies are available to faculty or staff with demonstrated expertise or prior applicable training. More information about the application and waivers can be found on the DPO website.

Implementation Updates and Reminders

Statement of Intent Deadlines - January 31 and April 30, 2024

Reminder: Each college has a Designee who will submit the Statement of Intent on behalf of their college. Please work with your college's appointed designee.

Progress Report

  • 84 faculty have attended the CADI so far.
  • We have had 20 courses submitted to CIM as of January 5. Thank you to all the faculty who worked over the break to submit their courses.
  • We ask that faculty submit their courses to CIM within three months of attending the Course Adaptation and Design Institute to help manage the installation plan's workflow and meet the final catalog deadline of January 31, 2025.

Curriculum Updates and Reminders

Seeking Solutions
We are excited to see Seeking Solutions courses added to the SOI and looking forward to receiving more!

Reminder: Seeking Solutions courses cannot double-count with major requirements, including restricted electives. If a Seeking Solutions course is a requirement in a major, the course will apply only to the student's major requirements, and they will need to take a non-major required Seeking Solutions course to fulfill the Seeking Solutions requirement.

Difference, Power, and Oppression Academies

Applications for the DPO Academy can be found on the DPO website.

Reminder: Waivers for the DPO Academies are available to faculty or staff with demonstrated expertise or prior applicable training. Participants who have successfully completed a recent DPO (DPD) Academy may be granted an automatic waiver, except in some circumstances. Demonstrated expertise may include a degree in relevant fields (i.e., Gender Studies), previous and consistent scholarship clearly rooted in DPO principles or service in related professional capacities. Applicable training can include extensive and directly targeted pedagogical training, workshops, or fellowships. Applicants for the waiver must provide adequate documentation or description to demonstrate eligibility. Training from external organizations is acceptable. Waivers are available on the DPO website.

Please do not hesitate to reach out with questions.

December 6, 2023

Dear Digest Subscribers,

As we head into winter break and the New Year, I want to share a few reminders and updates related to Core Education Implementation. Before we get to that, I am excited to report that we have started seeing course proposals enter the CIM system, and the Bacc Core Committee approved the first course, PS 206, last week! I continue to be amazed by the energy and enthusiasm of our university community around Core Education Implementation. I want to thank everyone involved in this process.

Reminders:

January 2, 2024 – CIM submissions due

For faculty who attended the September Course Adaptation and Design Institutes (CADI), please try to have your course proposals submitted to CIM by January 2, 2024. I realize some colleges with internal curricular processes can't meet this request, and I have communicated with the faculty and college leadership in these cases. If you would like support with your proposal, the CADI to CIM team is here to help (see attachment for more information).

January 31, 2024 – Statement of Intent due

College Designees can begin submitting Statements of Intent (SOI) for winter term CADIs. The soft deadline for the SOI is January 31, 2024. SOIs submitted after this deadline are still okay! The quarterly deadlines help us ensure enough space for faculty in upcoming CADIs.

Updates:

Registration for institutes, academies, and seminars will happen through Ideal-Logic, an online tool used widely throughout the university.

Difference, Power, and Oppression Advanced

The highly anticipated new category is coming to life! During the fall term, College Associate Deans regularly met with the Difference, Power, and Oppression Leadership and Alix Gitelman to determine major and college needs. We will continue these conversations and share information in the coming months.

Please do not hesitate to reach out with questions. Happy holidays and New Year, wishing you peace and rest.

Best,

October 19, 2023

Greetings,

I am writing with some exciting new developments in the implementation process related to the Difference, Power, and Oppression program. For those of you new to the Digest, we announced in the August digest the two interim hires for the DPO program:

  • Dr. Natchee Barnd is the interim Director of the Difference, Power, and Oppression (DPO) program. Dr. Barnd is an Associate Professor in Ethnic Studies and Native American Studies at the College of Liberal Arts.
  • Dr. Kali Furman is the Interim Assistant Director of DPO. Dr. Furman formerly taught as an instructor with the Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies within Liberal Arts.

Drs. Barnd and Furman spent the summer redeveloping the DPO Academy, creating the new DPO website, and preparing implementation plans.

Difference, Power, and Oppression (DPO) Program

Our program is expanding and adapting the DPO Academy offerings to improve student learning, increase faculty skills, and meet the new Core Education requirements.

One of the most significant changes is that DPO courses now require certification. Anyone looking to design or teach either a DPO I or DPO II course must complete the respective DPO Academies, or receive a waiver.

Uncertified instructors will be restricted from being assigned to any DPO course.

The DPO Academies

The DPO Academies prepare faculty/staff to design or to teach DPO courses. We now offer two levels of Academy to match the new Core Education offerings. Participants receive a stipend upon successful completion of the Academies. Apply here.

  • DPO Academy I: Foundations
  • DPO Academy II: Advanced

Academies can be taken before, during or after participation in our Core Education CADI, the Course Adaptation and Design Institute, which prepares faculty for submitting courses to the CIM proposal system. The Academies are offered in two formats:

  • in-term format (starting winter 2024)
  • 1-week summer session format

All Academies will take place in-person on the Corvallis campus. View the complete schedule for AY23-24.

More Notes on DPO Academy II: Advanced

The advanced DPO Academy provides faculty with a learning community experience to engage with advanced scholarship on difference, power, and oppression relevant to their fields, as well as feminist and critical pedagogies.

To participate in the DPO Academy II, you must have completed the DPO Academy I or received a waiver for the foundations Academy.

DPO Academy Applications and Waivers

Apply here.

Waivers for the DPO Academies are available to faculty or staff with demonstrated expertise or prior applicable training, including:

  • successful completion of a recent DPO (DPD) Academy
  • degrees in relevant fields (i.e. Gender Studies)
  • previous and consistent scholarship clearly rooted in DPO principles
  • extensive and directly targeted pedagogical trainings, workshops, or fellowships clearly rooted in DPO principles

All requests to waive participation in a DPO Academy (either DPO I or II, or both) must be submitted via our waiver form. Waiver requests require documentation uploads.

September 25th, 2023

Greetings,

Summer has been a busy time in the world of Core Education implementation. This week’s digest is focused on housekeeping items, reminders, and brief updates. Future digests will feature the Difference, Power, and Oppression (DPO) Academy, Signature Core updates, and the new Core Education website.

REMINDER - Statement of Intent (SOI) DEADLINE APPROACHING – OCTOBER 1ST

The SOI is due October 1st. Submitting by October 1st will guarantee faculty a spot in the December or Winter term CADIs – this is particularly important for kicking off the DPO Foundation Academy.

Signature Core and DPO Foundations

As you may recall, the September and December CADIs were designated for Foundational Core course (re)design. It is time to prepare for the Signature Core and DPO Foundations.

Faculty wanting to (re)design for:

  • DPO Foundations should take the December CADIs
  • DPO Advanced should take the March CADIs
  • Writing Elevation can start taking the December CADIs
  • Seeking Solutions and Beyond OSU can start taking the March CADIs

(Re)design for multiple locations

Faculty will be compensated to attend the CADI only once. If a course needs a collaborative (re)design with all campuses/modalities, either a faculty member can (re)design the course for all campuses/modalities (the other campuses/modalities will adopt the syllabus, assessments, materials, etc.), or multiple faculty members can work on the (re)design at the CADI and with the Ecampus DOC/ROC. CADI compensation will be provided to individuals on a one-time basis.

SOI Access

Review courses and the progress of courses submitted through the SOI

*Please remember the SOI can only be submitted by each college’s designee.

All CADIs occur 9 am-4 pm in Milam 215, aka the CADI Shack.

News from the Center for Teaching and Learning

Kara Clevinger, Assistant Director of the CTL writes -

Course Adaptation and Design Institute (CADI):

The first three CADIs were launched in September. We have had over 50 faculty participate in the CADI so far.

Here is what to expect to (re)design a course after the Statement of Intent has been submitted:

The Canvas Guide is the first stop along the way to getting a Core Ed course approved. It is a self-paced introduction to the five core areas essential to quality teaching and course development: course design, assessment, instructional methods, inclusive teaching, and technology. It offers faculty up-to-date, evidence-informed practices, with guidance on developing assignments and learning activities related to the new Core Ed Learning Outcomes.

After completing the Canvas Guide, faculty will have a course design map and syllabus template for their Core Ed course. And then it’s on to CADI!

CADI is the Course Adaptation and Design Institute, where faculty have dedicated time and support to finalize their Core Ed course syllabus and CIM proposal. The institute provides faculty opportunities to workshop their materials, get feedback, and build community with their Core Ed colleagues.

Ecampus will work with faculty on course (re)design. Faculty will have access to the Canvas Guide as part of the Ecampus course (re)design efforts.

News from the Office of the Registrar

New Hires

The Office of the Registrar has hired four team members (Matthew Croco, Meredith Haines, Stacy Spellings, and Chris Brakke) for the new Course Articulation Team, who have been busy working away at an ever-growing list of articulations to review.

Curriculum Management has added a new Curriculum Coordinator, Stephanie J. Baugh, to specialize in Core Education course proposals and will provide faculty with guidance and feedback when developing course proposals. Stephanie is new to OSU and formerly was a faculty member at a liberal arts college in the Midwest.

Transfer Articulations in the Office of the Registrar

Becca Wagner, Interim Senior Associate Registrar – Course Articulation writes –

The Transfer Articulations team has completed a first pass at assessing all the active articulations for Oregon community colleges, and we are spot-checking and doing some re-reviewing as we refine our processes, ensure consistency in our work, and establish good team dynamics. We will utilize bulk update processes to push attributes to existing articulations in Banner. We have yet to start this process, so the OSU community will begin to see those updates in Banner at a later date (to be determined). We hope to have this process established and started sometime in October, pending any unanticipated technical issues.

This concludes this week’s digest. Again, we will feature the DPO updates, our new website, and progress with the other Signature Core areas in near-future editions.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

One OSU:

If you have a course with sections offered across the university at multiple locations and modalities, please ensure you communicate and collaborate with faculty from those locations. We have received several questions about how many people can attend the CADI to revise a course or who is required to be part of the course (re)design process. Here are a few options:

  1. One faculty can (re)design the course for all sections and locations/modalities. The faculty teaching the class would adopt the (re)designed content, assessments, course map, etc., and participate in the Teaching in Core Education training.
  2. Multiple faculty across locations and modalities can take part in the CADI. If this is the chosen pathway forward, we ask that the faculty work together to determine which CADI date they want to attend. Coordination and consistency with the course (re)design will be easier if the CADI is attended as a cohort.

A reminder that if a course has sections at multiple locations/modalities, it must carry the identical Core Education designator across the university. We cannot simply have a section of a course at Cascades be in a Core Education Category while other sections at other locations are not. If you are responsible for a course with sections across the university, we encourage you to work with faculty at different locations to determine the best path forward. Please keep in mind when making decisions about which courses to move into the new curriculum that the needs of Cascades are considered and discussed with Cascades faculty and units. Please contact Pat Ball or McKenzie Huber if you have questions or need assistance making connections.

CIM submission requirements:

Once a course has been through the CADI and is ready for the CIM proposal system, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Assessment happens on the level of the course, not the individual section, i.e., all sections of the same course will use the same broad type of instrument to assess an outcome(s). Further emphasizing the need for faculty collaboration at the CADI. Please read more about assessment procedures and policies on our website -  Assessment of Learning.
  • If sections of the course are offered at multiple locations/modalities, the Bacc Core Committee needs a syllabus for each location/modality submitted to CIM.

Keeping courses in the Bacc Core:

FAQ: Will a course be allowed to hold a Bacc Core and Core Ed designation*?

Answer:  Courses may remain in their existing Bacc Core category and a category within the new Core Education program. The Bacc Core Committee will determine if the course can carry both attributes while being taught to the new Core Education category learning outcomes - we do not require courses to meet both sets of outcomes if they are moving to Core Education. Within CIM, a question form will ascertain a unit’s desire to carry both attributes.

Examples of alignment and rationale for carrying both attributes include lower division courses in the Bacc Core migrating to new Core Education categories; please note this list is not exhaustive:

  • Speech to Communication, Media, and Society
  • Math to Quantitative Literacy and Analysis
  • And many other possible scenarios

An example of alignment and rationale for carrying dual attributes include upper-division courses in the Bacc Core migrating to new Core Education categories:

  • CGI to Seeking Solutions
  • And many other possible scenarios

*If a course is changing levels and therefore needs a new course number, it is considered a new course. We are not accepting new courses into Bacc Core; therefore, it will only be permitted to be in the new Core Education category.

Statement of Intent:

The next due date for the SOI submissions is October 1 for the December and future CADI dates. Some colleges have submitted the SOI past the July 1 date, and we are doing our best to provide access to the September CADI. Faculty can elect to take a CADI anytime over the next several months to accommodate their schedules. However, Summer 2024 is the last CADI session we will offer to ensure adequate review and process time through the CIM system. All courses must be approved in the CIM proposal system by January 31, 2025.

SOI Submissions:

You can now view courses submitted through the SOI and their progress on our website. The site is updated weekly. If you do not see a course you submitted to the SOI, please contact McKenzie Huber or Caryn Stoess.

June 30, 2023

Greetings,

I hope your summer is off to a great start and you have some time for rest and relaxation. I am writing to share the latest and greatest in Core Education.

Reminder:

  • The Statement of Intent (SoI) for the September CADI is due July 1; please contact me directly if you need an extension.
  • Only college designees or their proxy may submit the SOI; we cannot accept the SoI from individual faculty. If there is a proxy, please let me know their name so I can add them to my list.

SoI Status:

So far, we have had 118 courses submitted from five colleges - this is incredible! I am working on a public-facing document to be posted to our website to keep everyone abreast of what has been put forward for each category and the status.

What happens after the SoI is submitted?:

  1. Weekly reports are generated and given to relevant stakeholders (CTL, Ecampus, Cascades, Core Education Director, Bacc Core co-chairs, Honors College).
  2. Faculty assigned to (re)design courses in the Foundational Core will be contacted to register for the September CADIs (*exception is DPO)
  • CADI dates - September 12, 21, and 27 (more dates to be added for September and fall once the Assistant Director in CTL is hired).
  1. Upon registration for CADI, faculty will be enrolled in a Canvas Guide (CG), which will be available on September 5. After completing the CG modules, faculty should have a syllabus, course map, and assessments ready to take to the CADI. The goal for the CADI is to leave the institute with a complete or nearly complete CIM proposal.
  2. For Ecampus courses, Ecampus will review the faculty assigned to the course and determine which training is required (DOC or ROC or, in some cases, faculty will be exempt); Ecampus will contact unit leaders and faculty to establish training expectations.

Signature Core and training:

The CADI and specialized training for some Signature Core categories (Beyond OSU, Transitions, Seeking Solutions) will be available starting in 2024. Training will require participants (re)designing courses in these Signature areas to complete CG modules called DAMIT+. These modules provide pedagogical and content support for these new categories. Additionally, we are collaborating with faculty and administration to determine training needed to teach in the Signature Core areas.

*DPO Foundations and Advanced - Given the recent leadership transition in the Difference, Power, and Oppression program, we will work with the interim Director and Assistant Director to review the current DPO Academy and create the DAMIT + training for the CG. The DPO Academy and CG may be available during the fall term. Course (re)design for DPO Foundations and Advanced will be on pause until we have had a chance to welcome and collaborate with the new DPO team.

Digest Listserv:

We now have a listserv for Core Education Digest emails. Membership includes college designees, the steering committee, and the core team. Additional recipients can subscribe through this link

The following digest is scheduled for August unless we have any late-breaking news. Please don't hesitate to reach out with questions in the meantime!

Dear College Designees,

I am excited to share updates about the progress of the general education implementation project, starting with an announcement that the new curriculum will be called CORE EDUCATION! Image removed. Introducing Core Education.pdf has additional context as to the naming process for those interested.

Alix Gitelman and I have been making the rounds to college leadership teams to discuss implementation and collect feedback. As a result of these rich conversations, much progress around planning has been made, and we look forward to finishing up leadership meetings this term. For now, here are a few updates:

  • Required professional development and training: There is a lot to cover on this topic, additional messaging will be sent in the coming weeks, so for now, here is what you need to know:
  • Course Adaptation and Design Institute (CADI): All campus-based courses intended to be in Core Education must go through an in-depth (re)design process led by the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL). Faculty responsible for (re)design will go through a one-day CADI with additional development requirements for Difference, Power, and Oppression, Writing Intensive Curriculum, Seeking Solutions, and Transitions. More information to come on compensation for CADI participants.
  • Ecampus courses: Stay tuned for more information.
  • Canvas Guide: All who teach in Core Education must participate in a self-paced Core Education Canvas Guide. Folks attending CADI will not have to participate in the Canvas Guide.

  • Transitions - We are taking the course design off your plates: After carefully reviewing the approved learning outcomes and criteria for the Transitions category, coupled with the fact that the course is 2-credits, a faculty fellow from the CTL will create a standard 2-credit Transitions course. The course will be created in partnership with a task force of stakeholders, including Ecampus and Cascades. The Transitions course syllabus and associated materials will be shared university wide. Colleges with first year-experience courses are welcome to attend the CADI to adapt their curriculum to incorporate the standard 2-credit course. All other colleges will not be required to participate in the CADI for Transitions, and instead, faculty responsible for teaching the Transitions course will participate in a self-paced Canvas guide created by CTL. Please note the Transitions category is not presently available on the SoI. We anticipate the category will appear on the SoI in Fall 2023 after the standard Transitions curriculum is developed in partnership with university stakeholders, and logistics have been sorted.

I am more than happy to engage in conversations and meetings with you and folks in your college beyond the college leadership meetings. I have already been invited to college curriculum council meetings and met with groups of department heads, and it has proven helpful for all involved. Please do not hesitate to use me as a resource – I am here to support you!

Best wishes,

June 7, 2023

Greetings,

I am following up from my prior message with a few updates:

  1. Core Education Email Digest - I realize there is a lot of information flow happening now and the website is being updated almost daily as we progress. I am attempting to send bi-weekly/monthly digest emails to this college designee group to manage the abundance of information and communicate timely updates as I have them. You are welcome to retain these digests as FYIs or share them within your relevant college circles.

  2. Updated Statement of Intent – We have added an additional field to the form to determine the exact location/modality each course will be taught to assess specific training needs between Ecampus and the CTL. The Statement of Intent help guide has also been updated and the changes are highlighted: Image removed. Updated Statement of Intent Help Guide and FAQs.pdf

  3. CADI dates – we have three scheduled so far and plan on adding additional dates once our full time Assistant Director has been hired (final interviews in progress as we speak). These dates are posted to the website in various places, and I am sharing here:
    • September 12, 21, and 27, 2023 CADI dates

  4. Required trainings and compensation updates – The required trainings website has been more fully developed over the last two weeks with FAQs, please visit first and let me know if you have any questions. After meeting with Human Resources and consulting with Payroll, we now have sharable information on how faculty will be compensated for attending various required trainings Image removed. Core Education training and compensation structure.pdf. *Please note, we will compensate faculty for the time they are in the training, but we will not compensate for the additional time it may take to fully (re)design a course. This time will need to be worked out within colleges between leadership and faculty.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
